Sadly this not a unique event in Florida. Our beautiful weather and natural scenery can be a really rewarding for the intrepid cyclist. However the combination of roadways without bicycle lanes or proper shoulders, year-round mild weather and a growing population have contributed to Florida having the 5th highest rate of Car – Bicycle accidents in the nation.
In fact the numbers of car strikes are so high they are almost frightening. More than 4,000 people are hit by cars while riding a bicycle each year in Florida. And of those 4,000 car accidents 100 or more prove fatal each year. In 2009 Florida had the most fatal car-bicycle accidents in the United States with 107 deaths from cars or trucks crashing into cyclists. That's really bad, when you should consider the population of Florida vs other large states like CA or Texas. It would seem when you choose to go for a ride along Florida's roadways you may want to make sure your insurance is up to date.
With an economy still struggling to get going in many areas of the state, it's unlikely local municipalities are going to have the funds or political will to add bicycle lanes to roadways, especially where bicycle lanes are needed most in popular and beautiful areas like Sarasota or Bradenton along the Gulf Coast.
If you are taking the bicycle for a ride always assume that cars and trucks traveling along side you do not see you. When crossing intersections be sure to look not just at the car but the driver. If the driver is not looking at you – they do not know you are there.
