Hit And Runs Are Way Too Common In Florida - 5 Things To Know As A Pedestrian

5 Things To Know As A Pedestrian In FloridaIn the United States, people tend to think of driving first when they wonder how to get from point A to point B. However, sometimes walking is the best solution, either because you don’t have a car, the distance is short, there’s no parking anywhere closer, or you just want to get some exercise. Cars are common, but everyone uses their feet sometimes.

However, pedestrians and cars don’t mix. Florida has some of the most dangerous streets and highways in America, and that’s not a statistic you want to be a part of. So if you’re going to walk very far in Florida, there are a few things you should know whether you’re a local or you’re from out of state.

Wear Bright Colors

Visibility is important if you want a driver to notice you in time, especially at night. Ideally you should wear clothes with reflective patches if you do a lot of walking at night, but if you don’t have anything like that you should at least wear bright colors that stand out even when the light is dim. Fortunately, bright colors aren’t hard to find in Florida.

Avoid Walking On Roads

This almost goes without saying, but if you want to stay safe you should stick to sidewalks, boardwalks, beaches, and other places where cars don’t go. If you have to follow a road with no path or sidewalk, try to stay to one side and walk on the left side instead of the right. The reason pedestrians walk on the left is so you can see cars coming and get out of the way if you need to.

Pay Attention

Walking while distracted isn’t nearly as dangerous as driving while distracted, but it can still be hazardous to your health. When you crank up your headphones and start messaging your friends on your phone you can end up losing track of the world around you, and that’s not a good thing when the world includes streets filled with fast-moving cars. At the very least you should turn down your music to the point that you can hear traffic around you and remember to look up from your phone so you can keep track of your surroundings.

Remember You Don’t Own The Road

Crosswalks and walk lights exist to keep pedestrians safe, not cars. Driving defensively is all about assuming the other driver will make a mistake and giving them enough room to do so without hitting you, and you should keep the same philosophy when you’re on foot.

PIP Insurance Can Apply To Pedestrians

Florida’s auto insurance laws require at least $10,000 of personal injury protection, or PIP. Unlike bodily injury insurance, PIP is a no-fault policy that covers your own injuries and not anyone else’s. In fact, you can use this policy anytime you’re involved in an auto accident whether or not you were in a car at the time.

However, you might not have PIP insurance because you’re from out of state or because you don’t own a car. If that’s the case, or if the PIP policy doesn’t cover the complete costs, you’ll have to sue the person who hit you or settle on a payment plan out of court and without any insurance coverage.

If you’re a pedestrian in Florida and you’re hit by a car, it can help to have a personal injury lawyer when you want to get compensation for your injury. If you contact the offices of Shapiro, Goldman, Babboni, Fernandez, and Walsh you’ll get a seasoned attorney who has experience with auto accidents and negotiating with insurance companies. So stay safe out there but don’t be afraid to call in some help when you need it.
